Oakley Grange Farm
Oakley Grange Farm is located just outside Hathern, in the heart of the Leicestershire countryside. As well as being a working farm, we are home to a buzzing café and delicatessen.
Oakley Grange Farm is over 200 years old, and has been run by the Mee family for the past two generations. Richard and Inger took over the farm in 2001 and since have farmed organically, raising beef cattle, pigs, sheep and laying hens alongside wheat, fruit and salad vegetables. Local beekeepers also house hives on the farm, to both pollinate the crops and provide delicious honey for the café.
The café is part of a busy working farm and boasts views over the countryside as well as into rural life. Tractors and animals alike can be seen from the café windows and visitors can also benefit from our local and farming expertise. We also host a wide range of events including an annual barn party, craft fairs, dinners and tapas evenings. See our website for further details.
As much food as possible is either grown or reared on the farm, and if not, we try to source from local suppliers. Everything is freshly prepared and served by Inger and the team in a relaxed and welcoming environment
Our livestock includes Lincoln Red pedigree cattle, Duroc pigs and Lincoln Long wool sheep which you will no doubt see on your way into the café or in the fields surrounding Hathern. These are rotated on a regular basis in accordance with organic ethos, and as such we cannot guarantee who will be around.
Farming to organic standards can be demanding as elements such as crop and animal rotation need to be considered carefully in order to maximise yield without the use of chemicals and fertilisers, and so traditional farming methods such as wide field margins create a buffer zone around the crops to encourage wildlife and reduce the impact of the crops on the land.
In addition, we monitor the wildlife and birds to gauge the effect we are having on the local environment. The RSPB carry out regular surveys and we were entered into the RSPB Nature of Farming Award 2013 and gained the title for the Midlands in the regional section and came third in the national awards.
