We grew up in the 1970s and a salad consisted of lettuce, cucumber, tomato, maybe some spring onions, or a radish or two or maybe grated carrot. It was invariably accompanied by a blob of salad cream. The salad was always an aside to ham or boiled eggs or perhaps some cheese, but it was never the star of the show.

How things have changed, now we’ve grown up and can cook for ourselves. The salad has become an exciting meal in itself and a time to experiment with flavours and textures.

We’ve spent some time analysing what makes a salad great and have broken it down into building blocks to set you up with texture and flavour foundations on which to create your masterpiece.

Of course there are so many things you can add to your salad and below are some starting points.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column_inner][/et_pb_row_inner][et_pb_row_inner admin_label=”Classic Caesar Header” _builder_version=”4.16″ background_color=”#853d01″ use_background_color_gradient=”on” background_color_gradient_type=”circular” background_color_gradient_stops=”#58b51e 34%|#ffffff 95%” background_color_gradient_start=”#58b51e” background_color_gradient_start_position=”34%” background_color_gradient_end=”#ffffff” background_color_gradient_end_position=”95%” custom_margin=”||15px||false|false” custom_padding=”5px||0px||false|false” animation_style=”fade” collapsed=”on” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column_inner saved_specialty_column_type=”3_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ background_position=”top_left” custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text admin_label=”Classic Caesar Dressing heading text” _builder_version=”4.16″ text_font_size=”15″ header_text_color=”#ffffff” header_3_font=”|700|||||||” header_3_text_align=”center” header_3_text_color=”#ffffff” border_style=”solid” global_colors_info=”{}”]

The building blocks of a salad

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column_inner][/et_pb_row_inner][et_pb_row_inner column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ admin_label=”Row” _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”0px|||” animation_style=”fade” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column_inner type=”1_2″ saved_specialty_column_type=”3_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_image src=”https://artisanfoodtrail.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/1-green-leaves.jpg” alt=”Green Leaves – The Artisan Food Trail” title_text=”1 green leaves” align=”center” align_tablet=”center” align_phone=”” align_last_edited=”on|desktop” admin_label=” Image” _builder_version=”4.16″ animation=”off” sticky=”off” border_style=”solid” always_center_on_mobile=”on” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text admin_label=” Text” _builder_version=”4.16″ text_font_size=”15″ header_2_font=”|600|||||||” header_2_font_size=”23px” border_style=”solid” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Get the green stuff

A salad doesn’t just need to be lettuce try other leaves such as spinach, kale, shredded cabbage, watercress, rocket.
